Quantum Optical Phase Estimation by Phase-Locked Loops

November 20, 2008 - 9:20-945am

RLE Conference Center - 36-428

Abstract

We show how the temporally varying phase of an optical beam can be  rigorously defined in the quantum regime and estimated at the quantum limits by the use of phase-locked loops.

Bio

Mankei Tsang is a post-doctoral fellow at the MIT Keck Foundation Center  for Extreme Quantum Information Theory. In collaboration with Prof. Seth Lloyd and Prof. Jeffrey H. Shapiro, he is currently working towards  discovering fundamental quantum limits to sensing and control. He received his Bachelor's degrees (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering and Physics from UCLA in 2002, and went on to receive his Master and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 2004 and 2006, respectively, under the supervision of Prof. Demetri Psaltis. His research interests include quantum optics, nano-optics, and nonlinear optics. More information about his research can be found at http://mankei.tsang.googlepages.com/.
