Quantum Optical Phase Estimation by Phase-Locked Loops

Abstract
We show how the temporally varying phase of an optical beam can be rigorously defined in the quantum regime and estimated at the quantum limits by the use of phase-locked loops.
Bio
Mankei Tsang is a post-doctoral fellow at the MIT Keck Foundation Center for Extreme Quantum Information Theory. In collaboration with Prof. Seth Lloyd and Prof. Jeffrey H. Shapiro, he is currently working towards discovering fundamental quantum limits to sensing and control. He received his Bachelor's degrees (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering and Physics from UCLA in 2002, and went on to receive his Master and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 2004 and 2006, respectively, under the supervision of Prof. Demetri Psaltis.
